Xiaomi: History and Development

Xiaomi Inc. [2] (Tionghoa: 小米 科技; Pinyin: Xiǎomĭ Kējì, literally "Xiaomi Technology", or "Little Rice Technology") is a privately owned Chinese private electronic company headquartered in Beijing dedicated to creating a user experience of all aspects. Xiaomi is the 3rd largest smart phone distributor in the World that designs, develops and sells smartphones, mobile apps, and consumer electronics. Since releasing its first smart phone in August 2011, Xiaomi has gained market share in mainland China.

Founder and CEO of Xiaomi is Lei Jun, who is the 23rd richest person in China according to Forbes. The company is now worth more than 10 billion USD and has more than 5000 employees, originating from China, Malaysia, Singapore, India, Philippines, and Indonesia.

According to IDC, Xiaomi is currently the world's third largest smart phone manufacturer followed by Lenovo and LG, respectively ranked fourth and fifth. Samsung is still the first in line despite declining production, followed by Apple in second place. Xiaomi is also the biggest smart telepoon vendor in China in 2014, after overtaking Samsung, according to IDC reports.

The name Xiaomi comes from Mandarin, which is "little rice". In 2011, CEO Lei Jun said that there is a greater meaning of the name Xiaomi.

He connects "Xiao" as a Buddhist concept which means "a grain of rice from Buddha is as large as a mountain", and says that Xiaomi wants to work from small things, not start from big things. While "mi" stands for "Mobile Internet" and also "Mission Impossible" because after establishing Xiaomi, there are many obstacles that seem impossible to face at that moment.

He also once said that the name Xiaomi is a funny name. In 2012, CEO Lei Jun said that the name is about the revolution and is able to bring innovation to new areas.

Xiaomi's slogan is "Just for fans" (Indonesian: Only for fans), because every step of the way is led by fans called "Mi Fans". In Xiaomi's interfaith, many were originally fans of Xiaomi's products before they decided to join Xiaomi. Xiaomi not only has a team full of vigor but also has the same attitude, that is pursuing perfection without stopping.

Xiaomi was founded by eight partners on June 6, 2010. In the first phase of institutional funding involvement, including Temasek Holdings, Singapore-owned investment company, capital funding company from China IDG Capital and Qiming Venture Partners, and Qualcomm processor development company.

On August 16, 2010, Xiaomi officially launched its first Android-based firmware, MIUI. The first smart phone announced in August 2011 was named Mi 1. Mi 1 uses an Android-based MIUI firmware that resembles TouchWiz from Samsung and iOS from Apple.

In August 2012, Xiaomi announced its smart phone called Mi 2. The phone is powered by Qualcomm's APQ8064 Snapdragon S4 Pro, 1.5 GHz quad-core Krait chip, 2 GB RAM, and Adreno 320 GPU. Xiaomi later said on 24th September 2013 that Mi 2 has sold over 10 million within 11 months. The Mi 2 has been sold by wireless phone vendors called MobiCity in the United States, Europe, United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand.

On September 5, 2013, CEO Xiaomi Lei Jun officially announced plans to launch a 47-inch, 3D-based, Andorid-based 3D smart TV to be assembled by Sony's Wistron Corporation in Taiwan.

In September 2013, Xiaomi announces the Mi 3 smart phone, powered by Snapdragon 800 (MSM8974AB) and Tegra 4 chipset from NVIDIA.

On September 25, Xiaomi announced plans to open a retail store in Beijing. In October 2013, Xiaomi was reported as the fifth most used smartphone brand in China. By 2013, Xiaomi has sold 18.7 million smart phones, and by mid-2014 as many as 26.1 million smart phones.

By 2014, Xiaomi announced it will expand its marketing outside of China. Xiaomi debuted internationally to Singapore. The international headquarters will also be built in the nation's capital, which will coordinate all activities including product launches in the region in the future. Redmi and Mi 3 are the first smartphones sold in Singapore respectively on February 21 and March 7.

On March 7th, the 3rd Mi sold out within 2 minutes in Singapore. After Singapore, Xiaomi also entered Malaysia, Philippines and India. Then, in the following months Xiaomi also entered Indonesia, and will expand to Thailand, Russia, Turkey, Brazil and Mexico.

On March 17, 2014, the Redmi Note phablet (also known as Hongmi Note) was announced by Xiaomi Lei Jun's CEO with a 5.5-inch HD display feature OGS screen technology and an octa-core processor from MediaTek. There are two variants of the Redmi Note, one with 1 GB RAM and 8 GB of internal storage; and the other with 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal storage.

In April 2014, Xiaomi bought a new domain with the name Mi.com at a price of 3.6 million US dollars, or about 44.5 billion rupiah. Mi.com became the most expensive domain name ever purchased in China, as one senior Xiaomi executive put it. Mi.com replaces Xiaomi.com domain which is the official site of Xiaomi.

In the second quarter of 2014, Xiaomi has sent 15 million devices or 14% of China's market share and has beaten Samsung which only sends less than 13 million devices. In July 2014, Xiaomi has sold 57.36 million mobile phones. In November 2014, Xiaomi said it would invest 1 billion US dollars or about 12.3 trillion rupiah to build television content. This investment aims to enrich the content of the company and become a determinant of economic direction for the industry.

In December 2014, Xiaomi completed the latest round of equity financing led by Hong Kong-based technology fund All-Stars Investment Limited, funds managed by former Morgan Stanley analyst Richard Ji raised more than US $ 1 billion and had more than 45 dollar billions of US, making it one of the most valuable private technology companies in the world.

MIUI is the Android firmware for smart phones and tablet computers based on open source Android operating system. This is the earliest known product of Xiaomi.
